Viettel Cameroon starts selling SIM cards ahead of this month's official launch [TeleGeography CommsUpdate](TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Viettel Cameroon, which was unveiled as the winner of the country's third mobile licence in December 2012 and which will operate under the brand name Nexttel, has started selling SIM cards ahead of its planned official network launch on 18 September. Agence Ecofin writes that the start-up is offering its new SIM for XAF100 (USD0.197), which will include 2G and 3G services. According to TeleGeography's GlobalComms Database, the new operator is a 70/30 joint venture between Vietnamese military-owned Viettel Group and Cameroon-based Bestinver Asset Management. It fought off rival bids from the likes of Maroc Telecom and Indian telecoms group Bharti Airtel for the licence, after pledging to invest nearly XAF200 billion in the rollout of a mobile network that will cover 81% of Cameroon's territory from launch, joining established mobile operators South Africa's MTN Cameroon and Orange Cameroun of France in the market.
